What's in my Yogi Bag

Since I'm always on the go teaching at different studios throughout the week there are some yogi essentials I always have in my bag.

First off, I love my Lululemon Triumphant Tote Bag which I got in "Persian Purple."
It is the perfect size for all my yogi essentials. It's not too bulky and has several compartments and pockets that help me keep my stuff organized, but also keep my CTA card & wallet somewhere that's easy for me to access, but still being able to keep those items secure. I also love the interior pocket that comes w/ removable bag for all my dirty yogi clothes & shoes.

What's inside:
I LOVE this blend of oils, it's a blend of wild orange, lemon. grapefruit, mandarin, bergamot, tangerine, clementine & vanilla. It is super energizing & many of my yogi friends have said that it smells like an "orange dreamsicle." It is the perfect energizing blend that wakes me up & I just place a couple of drops on my temples, behind my ears & the tops of my feet before I teach class. You can purchase this blend of essential oils via Ria's website http://www.mydoterra.com/rialovesyoga/ or contact me. =)

I purchased the "Wiccy Magic Muscles Massage Bar" because after teaching so many classes/practicing yoga throughout the week my muscles tend to get a bit sore. This massage bar is so awesome because it has whole Aduki/Azuki (Japanese Red Beans) Beans in the bar that when you glide it onto your skin it feels like fingertips that work to relieve the muscles & tension.
Some benefits:
  • Aduki beans work your muscles and aches as the bar is massaged into the skin and they help to break out tension.
  • Cinnamon leaf oil is a brownish-yellow oil, which has a warm, rich and spicy aroma. Commonly used to fight feelings of depression, weakness and exhaustion, it has many other properties, including being an antiseptic, antibiotic and analgesic

I like using this powder after showering, it's great because sometimes after teaching/working out I still feel like I'm sweating but this dusting powder is awesome because it soaks up that extra moisture. The girls at LUSH were also nice enough to give me a little container so I wouldn't have to have to worry about the powder making a mess in my bag or have to carry the entire container in my bag. The smell of Jasmine and cocoa butter leaves a nice fresh scent on your skin too.

I love that LUSH products are all fresh, organic & handmade. LUSH also believes in protecting people, animals, and the planet. They pride themselves on creating sustainable products and reducing waste by selling products (like the massage bar) without plastic packaging and when necessary selling their products in recyclable containers.

EOS, The best lip balm, ever! Some people think that it's like a big egg when I bust it out of my bag. Sweet Mint & summer fruit are my fav flavors. It's 95% organic & 100% natural. It's pretty cheap too & you can find it at your local drugstore or beauty supply store.

The perfect mild facial cleanser after teaching/working out. I keep the travel size cleanser in my bag. I like this cleanser lathers on your skin, removes make-up & dirt but doesn't dry out your skin.
This is pretty much the item that I do not forget to pack before teaching/working out because I definitely have to stay hydrated! I recommend that everyone purchase a reusable water bottle because not only does it reduce your carbon footprint from purchasing a plastic water bottle, it also saves you some money because you can refill it throughout the day!!! (you don't have to buy a Hello Kitty one, but she's my fav so this one works for me hehe)

Year of the Dragon 2012

HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR! Today I brought the theme of the Dragon into my classes. With the Lunar New Year, 2012 is the year of the Water Dragon. The Year of the Water Dragon is said to be a year for great, deeds, innovative ideas and big projects. The year of the Dragon is also said to bring excitement, big ups and downs in our lives.

What makes the Dragon special is that unlike the other Chinese Zodiacs, some may view the Dragon as a mythical creature rather than an actual animal. What I found special about the Dragon is that it is a karmic animal, it is said to give happiness and success to all good and honest people.

So this year we should give love, share happy thoughts and love & happiness will return to us. Since the Dragon is a karmic animal, it returns positive energy which you give to others.

I felt that the ideas and meaning of the Year of the Dragon really tied in with the "yogi journey" because many yogis (myself included) sometimes focus on what their practice should look like or maybe worry that they are not advanced enough to try a certain pose, etc; when what we should be focusing on is the excitement of perhaps trying something new or even focusing on the present. It is said that in order to bring good fortune for the new year, on New Year's Day you should not focus on things of the past, but instead focus on the present. This is something you can definitely relate this into your yogi practice especially because the focus of your practice should always be in the present moment; not worrying about anything else.

Another special aspect of the Dragon is that it's viewed as the "free spirit" of the Zodiac. So if this year you are looking to try something new or maybe you have some impossible dream...maybe 2012 is the year to make it happen. If you would have asked me three years ago when I was still living in LA if I would have thought I would be teaching yoga in Chicago...I don't think I would have even dreamed of that happening. I may not have everything in life figured out, but I am okay with that and I do expect that with the year of the Dragon I'll experience excitement, big ups & big downs, but am happy and excited for what the new year has to offer.

Active Wear

Last week I had the opportunity to do some yoga with CorePower Yoga in the storefront at Old Navy on State St. in Chicago. It was really awesome because they even let us pick out an outfit from their Activewear line! I was surprised at the wide selection they have to offer for Activewear; Old Navy offers several different options in terms of fit and great selection for men and women...all at a reasonable price!

I selected the "Women's Racer Back Active Tank" in the warm smoke print. I like that the top has a built-in bra and I really liked the fit with the keyhole opening in the back. I was doing yoga for about 2 hours in the storefront and the top definitely allowed me to continue with my flow; the top is from their "Go Dry!" line and the fabric is moisture wicking so it still allowed my skin to breathe as well.

I also selected the "Women's Active Control Max Pants." I really liked the fit of these pants, especially since they are fitted at the bottom of the pants. There is also a mesh trim that's below the waistband which provides ventilation.

A little info. about the pose featured in the picture...Reverse Warrior aka Viparita virabhadrasana
Both legs are very active in this pose..the benefits of this pose is that it is a great stretch for the side body as well a great hip opener. Reverse warrior also helps build strength in the lower body.

Turquoise Mala Beads

"Turquoise has been known by many names, but the word turquoise, which dates to the 17th century was derived from the french language turques, because it was first brought to Europe from Turkey.

Turquoise is a master healing stone. It fosters healthy relationships, attracts good fortune, prosperity, happiness, releases shame and guilt. It is a protector and cleanses the body from environmental pollutants. Helps with high blood pressure, asthma, infections, TMJ and dental problems.  It is believed that turquoise brings prosperity, good fortune, strength and helps overcome illness. Turquoise was esteemed by Tibetan Shamans for both its spiritual and physical healing and protective qualities.

Turquoise is associated with the Throat Chakra."

I was so happy when I got these Mala Beads today because not only do I love the color turquoise, I really love the meaning of these beads and the mantras they are charged with. I can appreciate on a personal level the idea that Turqoise is an "efficient healer" and helps calm the nerves...when I first started teaching yoga I let my nerves get the best of me (at times I am still guilty of that) but once I let go of that fear is when I am able to truly connect with my students. I am still continuing this "yogi journey" where I am learning something new everyday, whether it be from my peers or students, and understand now that in order to deepen the experience for my students I need to first believe that I have the confidence to hold the room. Turquoise is associated with the "throat chakra" aka Vishudda Chakra which is associated with "creativity and self-expression;"  which are two very important aspects to me as a yoga instructor. I love having the ability to express myself and create a flow that reflects my personality.

love. happiness. prosperity. good fortune. strength.
